Gallivanting Guide To Gulf Shores/Orange Beach

If you follow me on Instagram or read my last blog post, then you probably know that my family and I were in Gulf Shores last week for vacation. We’ve been vacationing there for the last 6 years or so, and we always find ourselves wanting to go back!

We were so excited to go this time and actually get to relax on the beach! When we visited in May it literally rained the whole week we were there. It was awful! This time the weather was perfect, and I came back with a pretty good tan!

A big part of why we love Gulf Shores is that it’s a small town but there’s still so much to do and see! We love to rent bicycles and cruise around the near by neighborhoods or spend our evening shopping at The Wharf.  But let’s be real, the food is my favorite part of any vacation. Every year we always end up eating at the same places, but it’s only because the food is soooo good! This time we decided to venture out and try some new places, and needless to say we were not disappointed!

I’ll stop rambling now and get on with it.

Where To Eat

Coffee|Breakfast

Southern Grind Coffee House- The cutest little coffee shop ever! My mom and I love this place and could stay and admire the chic coastal decor all day long. The Salted Caramel Iced Latte is delicious and we basically licked the plate of the Peach Pecan French Toast that we ordered. They have 2 locations, the original location is at The Wharf and the new one is at Hotel Indigo.

Kitty’s Kafe- This place is AMAZING! The couple that lived across the street from our rental house recommended it to us. It’s so good that we went for breakfast and dinner! It has a very warm and homey atmosphere and the best comfort food I’ve ever had! You really can’t go wrong with anything you order from here.

Lunch|Dinner

LuLu’s- Expect to wait at least an hour during the summer months for a table, but there’s plenty to do while you wait! You can usually find Will and I having a drink at the outside bar or playing skee ball in the arcade. The food is incredible and I’ve never ordered anything here I didn’t like. The Crab melt is a favorite of mine along with the Smoked Tuna Dip. We literally order like 10 things off the menu and everyone just shares because it’s so good!

Bahama Bob’s Beach Side Café- It’s this tiny place with barely enough seating but the food is totally worth it! The Crab Cay Baked Whitefish is heavenly. It’s fresh fillets stuffed with crab stuffing and topped with grilled shrimp. As far as drinks go, a few sips of the Bahama Bob and you’ll be feeling pretty good for the rest of the night 🙂

Hog Wild BBQ- This is one of the new places we tried and I’m glad we did. I’m very picky about my BBQ because I don’t think anything compares to Sweet P’s here in my hometown, but this was a close runner up! They have a bunch of different sauces you can try and the pork tacos are delicious!

Sassy Bass Amazin’ Grill- It’s a little place attached to a grocery/liquor store right down from where we stay. We read great reviews on it and so we decided to give it a try. Mexican seafood is how we described this place lol. They serve everything with yellow rice and the Mexican Street Corn is probably the best I’ve ever had!

Lambert’s Café- Home of the throwed rolls! Literally. You want a roll? You better stand up and catch it! You will feel miserable when you leave here because they just keep bringing you food. You order your entrée and they bring around the sides in big bowls and you can ask for as much as you want, as many times as you want!

Papa Rocco’s PizzaIt’s cheesy, greasy, and perfect in every way! They’re also pretty popular for their oysters and have nightly entertainment.

Kitty’s Kafe So good I had to mention it twice! I can’t say enough about this place! Just go and order everything on the menu!

The Village Lawn- A great place for the family to grab dinner, play games, and listen to music! They have a Panini, BBQ, and a Burrito truck. Don’t leave without getting a Piggly Wiggly from the Frost Bites truck! It’s a dessert like no other. They put vanilla custard in the bottom, shaved ice with which ever flavor you choose, and then top it with sweet cream and a taffy pig!

Billy’s Seafood Market- We always say we are going to cook our own seafood one night and this time we finally did it! Billy’s Seafood is the best place to get it! We picked up some shrimp, crab cakes, and smoked tuna dip. It was definitely an interesting time watching my stepdad and I devein the shrimp.

Cocktails|Dessert

The Hangout- Anywhere they play “Shout” and dance on tables while throwing napkins up in the air is my kind of place! We like The Hangout for the drinks and atmosphere more than anything else. They have a few outside bars and there’s always live music in the evenings. It’s right on the beach and the perfect place to let loose and have a good time!

Tacky Jack’s- I’m not a fan of Bloody Mary’s but my mom and Will say Tacky Jack’s makes the best one yet! We like the one on Fort Morgan because it has the best view. You can grab a drink from the downstairs bar and step outside to watch the sunset over the bay.

The Gulf- We actually went here to eat back in May and it was really cool. It’s all made from old shipping containers and it’s a great place for drinks and to enjoy the view since it’s right on the water.

The Yard- I ordered the Sea Salted Caramel Cheesecake Shake and it literally came with a piece of cheesecake on top! Expect to pay $14-$17 for these delicious shakes, but you get to keep the mason jar!

The Chocolate Corner- If you’re just looking to get a simple ice cream cone I recommend stopping in here. The staff is very friendly and it’s a perfect after dinner dessert.

Where To Shop

The Wharf- I could spend all day here going into every shop! They have tons of great boutiques and home décor shops. There’s a couple of restaurants, an outside bar by the marina, and even an amphitheater to catch a few summer concerts.

Tallulah’s Treasures- A quirky little store that my mom and I love! We never leave Gulf Shores without stopping in here!

Fairhope- If you have some free time on your trip I highly recommend spending a day here. It’s a charming little town on Mobile Bay, about a 45 minute drive from Gulf Shores. Full of antique shops, boutiques, and quaint little cafes, you are sure to fall in love with this beautiful place.

Things To Do

Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo- The best part about this zoo is how close you are to the animals. They have a chickens, ducks, and even a peacock that they just let walk around with the people! You can do encounters with the Lemurs and the Kangaroos for $5 and your money is going to a great cause. A few years back we got a chance to do an encounter with the baby tigers and it was the coolest experience ever!  The zoo is funded by a non profit cooperation and they are always in need of food and supplies for the animals. You can go to their website to read more about them and help donate.

Beach Bum Services- We rent our bicycles from here and you can also rent kayaks and paddleboards. It’s very convenient and the staff is great. If there is a problem with anything you rented they will come out and fix it or replace it free of charge. They will deliver your rentals the day you arrive and pick them up the day you leave.
